If we made the road to Chiang Rai, it is mainly to book a tour a few days in the forest if possible boat ride and elephant, not to mention visits to mountain villages. So when we arrived we headed to an organization recommended by Lonely Planet to organize treks. It is an association (Hill Tribes, PDA towers) which uses all funds raised to improve life in the villages (construction of reservoirs for water, communication to limit the spread of AIDS ...). They present a plan for a two-day trek that includes everything you wants. We said that if they wait two days we can make the trek with a Dutch couple who have already booked, otherwise we will be alone with the guide. We decide to wait, by changing the program a bit we found plenty to deal with.
The association is located in the same building as a museum on the theme of the different tribes living in Thailand. Very informative about their habits, their dress, their differences, their hunting techniques etc.. Part of the museum is devoted to opium since many tribes lived on his farm and had to find new sources of revenue. Despite government efforts, there still some areas where the opium grows for use by tribes.
We then went to visit some temples.
which a temple where a ceremony was taking place.
We ended the day walking along the river and eat our first meal at the Western (burger). I must admit that their meals are very good but not rich enough, it is good to go back to our habits from time to time.
